Staff Sergeant Jack Carlson of the US Army and his family paid thanks to Bay County Commissioner George Gainer by presenting an American flag and a plaque to him at his place of business.
Carlson is close friends with the Gainer family and, before deploying to Afghanistan, Gainer provided a place for Carlson and his family to spend time together before leaving.
Carlson and his wife and son are stationed in Alaska and rarely see their family in Panama City.
"Living in Alaska doesn't allow for us to see our family very often," said Carlson. "So, he provided us a location to all meet, in fact, some of the times it was the only time that my family had been able to see my son before I deployed.
"In his honor, I flew a flag overseas in Afghanistan for about 55 missions."
Commissioner Gainer says he's known Carlson and his family for more than 20 years.
