Posted: Updated:

The Bay County Sheriff's Office released information today that a male inmate at the Bay County Jail died from self-inflicted asphyxiation at approximately 11:37 p.m. last night.

Robert Charles Batty, Jr, DOB 12/24/80, was pronounced dead at approximately 11:37 p.m. June 25, 2013.

The body was turned over to the Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy.

The inmate was arrested on 4/17/2013 for Violation of Probation on a Felony Battery conviction stemming from an arrest in July of 2012 on an original charge of Sexual Battery/Forcible Rape. While on probation, he failed to report a change in residence to his probation officer and was arrested.

The inmate went to court on June 10, 2013, and received a sentence of 13 months in prison for his Violation of Probation. He was then returned to the Bay County Jail and moved into the Department of Corrections (DOC) Pod to await transport to prison to serve his sentence.

Last evening, he was checked by corrections officers at 10:47 p.m. for nightly lock-down. At 11:16 p.m., officers returned to do a head count and discovered the inmate had asphyxiated himself using a bed sheet. Officers began CPR. Jail medical personnel also responded and continued CPR. EMS arrived at 11:37 p.m. but attempts to revive him failed and he was pronounced dead.
