Season Pass Prices Increasing at PCB Aquatic Center

Posted: Updated:

Season pass holders will now have to pay more to get access to the Panama City Beach Aquatic Center, although the cost for a single day pass will remain the same.

The City Council members of Panama City Beach voted, Thursday, to approve an increase in season pass fees at the pool.

"We are just doing our best to kind of maintain our services and the quality of life, but be smart about how we do it," said Wil Spivey, Director, PCB Aquatic Center.

The new fee schedule includes is a $15 dollar increase for a 20-visit pass, a $90 increase for the individual pass, $80 for the family pass, and a $75 increase for military passes.

"We've done internal surveys.. a lot of our members seem to agree that its something that they would be willing to pay a little bit more for."

If the number of season pass holders stays the same, the city-subsidized facility could see almost $20,000 worth of extra profits next year.

"At the price before.. the individual membership ran maybe about a quarter a day.. and you know you come out we have hot showers.. Two beautiful pools at this facility so we think its equal to more like a dollar a day.. and that's about what we are charging."

Not everyone seems to agree, Council Woman Josie Strange, the only no-vote, feels like the money should come from elsewhere.

"The issue for me is once again the locals are being burdened with an increase in fees," said Josie Strange, Panama City Beach City Council Woman, Ward 3. "Just like the next water rate.. It's going to increase the locals, the residents not the tourists."

Strange would prefer the money be taken from the ball fields, which would take some of the burden off the locals.

"The rates are so minuscule for the number of people that come in here.. and everybody is happy with that because the amount of people that come in here, and we get one percent off those people.. but that one percent is also paid by the local people too."

To offset the extra costs, the aquatic center will start offering promotional discounts throughout the year to their pass holders.

The new prices are effective immediately.
