We take it for granted, especially this time of the year, until it stops working. The summer is tough without air conditioning. For one Panama City resident, she says she has been without a/c for way too long and contacted News 13 for help.
Pam White of Panama City says since her air conditioning system went on the blink back on Saturday, July 13...home is not a comfortable place to be. White says, "It is not cool in there. It is like 86, 87 degrees." White says she called a repair service on July 15th and says, "I waited past the weekend…waited until Monday cause I did not want to pay the extra fees."
White told us an initial repair estimate came in at $1500. She says she had used the repair company before and they had done a good job.
But then, she got a call the very next day from another company representative (same company)...saying the repairs could be done for only $250. She just had to pay up front. According to White, "The part was ordered. He said it would be here Thursday. He would come and fix it. Thursday came, Friday came, Saturday and Sunday came."
However, White says there was a question over the part being the correct one for her system. She says, "Needed a valve.. He had to trade that in and wait for new part."
A small, window a/c is the only way Pam White says she can stay in her home and they are staying in the living room…to try and keep cooler.
And if she could do it all over, Pam White says she would get several quotes from other companies for repairs. And, she has this advice, "Go with someone reputable.. maybe advertises…who at least advertises."
I spoke with Eric Curti of Eddie Curti Heating and Air Conditioning. He tells me a slightly different story on how the initial evaluation was reached on Pam White's cooling system. Curti would not talk with me on camera, but did say he and his father have been in business for more than 25 years. Curti said he tried to help Ms. White as best he could...at a lower cost. He told me he is refunding her $250. Pam white is looking elsewhere for repairs and we will continue to help in that regard.
