Outside agencies in Bay County got the chance to request a portion of the county's 2014 budget on Thursday. The Bay County Board of County Commissioners held a workshop this morning which moved them one step closer to passing the budget in September.
Nearly a dozen agencies, such as the Council on Aging and Early Learning Coalition, presented their budget requests and many asked for the commission to match funds. Some grants require local governments to match a certain percentage of the grant money.
Chairman George Gainer said these requests were reasonable to consider for this year's budget.
However, many commissioners brought up concerns about the efficiency of the Bay Town Trolley system. The Bay County Transportation Planning Organization is requesting about $92,000 for 2014. That's an increase from what they needed to run the system last year.
"We have a lot of folks that depend on the trolley . . . and other people see the empty buses, and say we don't need it so we always have to work through that and try to make sure the money we give the trolley are good investments on behalf of the people of Bay County," said Gainer.
The Bay County Sheriff's Office also requested about $300,000 to hire four deputies to cover the Cedar Grove area.
The workshop will resume next Thursday to discuss budgets from the constitutional offices and the possibility of bonuses for county employees.
