Freeport Woman Charged With Animal Cruelty

Posted: Updated:

A Freeport woman is facing a felony animal cruelty charge following a four month investigation by the Walton County Sheriff's Office.

According a WCSO news release, Nancy Joe Payne was arrested Friday morning and investigators executed a search warrant at her home at 1426 J. W. Hollington Road later that afternoon.  Authorities said a total of 103 malnourished animals – six horses and 97 dogs – were seized and taken to the Alaqua Animal Refuge for treatment until they can be placed in new homes.

The investigation has been underway since April and more charges are pending, the WCSO said.
