After spending 18 years in the dugout as baseball coach for Gulf Coast State College, Darren Mazeroski has taken his baseball savvy to scouting young ballplayers and he's doing so for one of baseball's best teams, the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Maz is in his 8th year as a scout. His job is evaulating amateur talent in the Southeast for the Pirates and their minor league clubs. As for the Pirates, if things continue as they are, they'll post a winning record and a playoff berth for the first time in over 20 seasons.
Darren says it's fun to be a part of the process of what's going on with the big league club, even though he's pretty far removed from it at the amateur scouting level, but says still just to have a hand in what's going on is satisfying.
Darren is the son of Pirate great, Hall of Famer Bill Mazeroski.
