Gulf Coast Women's Basketball Receives Honor

Posted: Updated:

Roonie Scovel spent 16 seasons at the helm of the Gulf Coast women's basketball team. In that time, she amassed 14 consecutive Conference Championships, nine State Championships, and three National Championships, and now, one of the National Championship teams is receiving special recognition.

The 2002-2003 Lady Commodore squad went a perfect 35-0 en route to capturing a National title, and today, Coach Scovel, her longtime assistant Grover Hicks, and the team received word that they will be inducted into the Court of Legends by the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches.

Scovel was 461-60 while at Gulf Coast, and was awarded the National Junior College Athletic Association's Coach of the Year three times. She stepped down after the 2011 season, and was succeeded by Vernette Skeete, who was a member of that undefeated 2003 team.

The Court of Legends induction ceremony will be held in Lakeland on September 22nd.
