Bay County, Fla. -

The flu can be a difficult illness to get over.  With flu season on the horizon, it's time to begin thinking about scheduling your flu vaccine.

Dr. Jennifer Follwell from Bay Medical-Sacred Heart Family Medicine says, "The influenza vaccine is your best defense against an infection with the the influenza virus."

The Centers for Disease Control recommends the flu vaccine for the following groups:

  • Anyone over 6 months of age
  • The elderly
  • Pregnant women
  • Young children
  • Those with chronic illnesses

Dr. Follwell says flu symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Runny nose
  • Headache
  • Fatigue

Dr. Follwell recommends early treatment if symptoms do develop.  She says treatment with antiviral medications works best within 48 hours of noticing symptoms.
