Bay County's Public Transportation System will soon be managed by a private company. However, First Transit, Inc. cannot receive federal dollars because it is not a government entity.
At Wednesday afternoon's Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) meeting, members agreed to ask Bay County to serve as the financial conduit and manage the Bay Town Trolley's funds.
West Florida Regional Planning Council in Pensacola currently oversees that money.
The TPO Chairman said the board would also like to have the role filled closer to home.
"We're trying to bring that part of the process to our local TPO area," said Chairman Rodney Friend. "The County has expressed an interest in assuming that role locally."
The Bay County Board of Commissioners will review the TPO's request. If commissioners do not agree to oversee the funds, West Florida Regional Planning Council will continue to do so.
