One iconic structure in Marianna has captivated the attention of the community, city and county. The Russ House Properties have been for sale to the public for over a month and Tuesday Jackson County Commissioners announced the role they will play in the landmarks future.
The Russ House properties consist of the obvious Russ House, the adjacent parking lot and the Brown House. Two weeks ago the Jackson County Commission announced that the Tourist Development Council and Chamber, which currently occupy the building, work with the city of Marianna and the commission to solve the ownership saga. Tuesday the City of Marianna proposed to pay off mortgage and architect fees totaling $156,000. The deed would belong to the city and county.
For a small rent fee the Chamber and TDC will remain in the house.
According to County Administrator, Ted Lakey, the joint ownership is a win-win for the property and community, "It becomes a cost sharing arrangement between the county and the city, TDC. Possibly the Chamber may stay as one of the tenets. So, anytime you can get a group to share the cost it's a good thing." According to the proposal the TDC would make immediate repairs to the Russ House. As for the Brown House, the city and county would renovate the building and the Jackson County Developmental Center would occupy the building.
