After hours of discussion, the proposed Dollar General Store project in Inlet Beach was rejected by the Walton County Commission, Tuesday
Inlet Beach residents have been fighting the proposed 9,100 square foot development since signs went up, sighting safety and aesthetic reasons for their Dollar General disdain.
Meteorologist Chris Smith from our competing station (and fellow Inlet Beach Resident) led the charge against the potential business, drawing a petition with more than six hundred signatures.
Tuesday, he and several citizens took on Teramore Development, who chose the site for Dollar General on Highway 98 and North Walton Lakeshore Drive.
Though citizens, including Smith, have met with Teramore several times to discuss aesthetics, including landscaping and architectural elements that would make it more neighborhood friendly, Smith called these measures "lipstick" on a site that the neighborhood does not want.
Then there are the safety concerns, as the site sits adjacent to a residential area and could potentially draw traffic through the neighborhood instead of making a necessary u -turn on highway 98, if driving back west.
Ultimately the project was voted down by Commissioners 3 to 2.
