A teacher in Holmes County is charged with felony child abuse after paddling a student.

According to an arrest affidavit from the Holmes County Sheriff's Office, Ponce de Leon Elementary School teacher Ryan Avery Leavins is charged after spanking a 5-year-old handicapped child.

Deputies say that Leavins admitted to spanking the child after he became unruly in class. Leavins said he asked the child repeatedly to calm down, then showed him the paddle, then took the child out of the classroom on three different occasions and spanked him a total of five times on the buttocks.

The affidavit says that there were visible physical injuries to the child.

Holmes County Superintendent of Schools Eddie Dixon says Leavins was placed on administrative leave with pay, but submitted his resignation. The Holmes County School Board accepted his resignation on Tuesday.
