More information is now available surrounding the sudden resignation of Panama City Fire Chief Wayne Watts.
According to letters in Watt's personnel file obtained today, there was an incident at a staff meeting that caused the department's assistant chief and battalion chiefs to request a meeting with City Manager Ken Hammonds.
The letters, dated October 10th, describe an outburst by Watts in front of 14 members of the senior leadership of the department as well as two junior officers.
Although Watts claimed that he was "joking" during the incident, it was serious enough for the battalion chiefs to hold a meeting with Hammonds the same day for what they described as "out of control and completely unprofessional" behavior.
Watts turned in his resignation letter on Wednesday, effective November 11th.
