Walton High's Carly Davis- Scholar Athlete of the Week

Posted: Updated:

The Walton Brave volleyball squad fell to Pensacola Catholic last week in the 4A District 1 title match. As postseason play begins, Walton finds themselves on the road for the first game of Regionals, but are led by a good group of seniors- including setter Carly Davis.

When it comes to experience, Carly has plenty of it. The senior is in her third varsity season with the Braves, and her growth on the court, has steered the team to their success this season.

"Settings a big leadership role," she said. "It's definitely not easy at times, and it's a lot of fun and a lot of hard work. It's fun to have quick sets, and all the different kind of sets you can do with all the players."

"She doesn't get too rattled, she doesn't get too excited, but it's just enough to keep that steady set momentum on our side," head coach Marla Brooks says of her senior setter. "She's clicked with these hitters this year, and it's exciting."

It's exciting because the Braves are headed to the postseason for the third straight year, with Carly leading the way with over 360 assists on the season, 32 kills and 26 aces.

"They feed off of her enthusiasm when they do something well and she gets excited too, it brings the momentum of the team up," said coach Brooks.

But it's not only on the court where the girls depend on Carly, as she's setting an example in the classroom as well, balancing a 3.7 GPA.

"I try and be a leader everywhere I go, especially in the classroom," she said. "I just try and make time, especially when we have three games a week, I try and make time afterwords to study."

"Being able to bust it in the classroom, their dedication to those books, it flows onto the floor with their dedication to the sport," said coach Brooks. "They don't miss practice. They're here, they're going to give it their best whatever their doing."

With the postseason days away from starting, Carly, and her teammates, are hoping that dedication pays off.

"We won districts last year, we made it to the Sweet 16, but we've always stopped there," said Carly. "Hopefully we keep going further. I just want to leave that here for Walton."

An appearance in the Regional Finals, and maybe more, is something Walton would gladly accept. Carly and the Walton Braves take on a tough Florida High squad for their first Regional game. Game time is set for 6/CT on Wednesday in Tallahassee.
