A couple of weeks ago, News 13 told you about cases of the stomach flu going around, and now it's back.

Dr. Maria Parris from Bay Medical-Sacred Heart Family Medicine says the stomach flu is also known as gastroenteritis.  She says viral gastroenteritis can be very contagious and can last three days or longer.

Symptoms include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever

Dr. Parris says you should get medical attention if symptoms do not start to disappear after 72 hours or if they get worse.  You should also seek attention if you experience signs of dehydration.

She says symptoms of dehydration include:

  • Decreased or no urine production
  • Dry mouth or skin
  • Weakness
  • Low blood pressure

Dr. Parris says there are several things you can do to prevent gastroenteritis:

  • Wash your hands and produce before eating
  • Do not eat any undercooked or raw meats
  • Avoid consuming raw foods and ice while traveling
  • Drink only from sealed bottles while traveling
  • Avoid contact with infected individuals
