The flu can be a very serious illness.

Dr. Jennifer Follwell from Bay Medical-Sacred Heart Family Medicine says symptoms of the flu include:

  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Runny nose
  • Headache
  • Fatigue

Dr. Follwell says the best way to protect yourself is to get a flu shot.  The Centers for Disease Control recommend the vaccine for the following groups:

  • Anyone over the age of 6 months
  • The elderly
  • Pregnant women
  • Young children
  • Those with chronic medical conditions

Dr. Follwell says antiviral medicines work best if taken within 48 hours of when symptoms begin.
