While you're shopping this holiday season, consider buying a coat or toy for a child in need. You can do your part simply by heading over to your local Wal-Mart.
Each weekend throughout the month of December, you can help them "fill the trucks."
During this non-traditional take on a coat and toy drive, cardboard trucks will take their place at the Wal-Mart on 23rd street, waiting for you to fill them up.
The best part is it all goes to local kids in need.
"Just makes you feel good to know that you can make a boy or a girl happy. That's love," said inspired shopper, Deborah Hodges.
It's a love that is spreading straight to the hearts of 120 local kids who will now get a Christmas they may not otherwise get.
"This tugs at your heartstrings. Christmas is about kids. So, if you can spare even a dollar for a coloring book, you're helping," said Lori Allen of the Gulf Coast Children's Advocacy Center.
The organization was chosen by the 23rd street Wal-Mart to receive the truck's bounty.
Shoppers can purchase toys and coats in the store and drop them off in the boxes all December long.
"The overwhelming response we get are from the families who just embrace us and cry and are so thankful that we've been able to help these kids who've already been through such traumatic experiences," said Allen.
Call it "restoring innocence" to children who've had to face very adult realities; the burden of varying types of abuse that can perhaps be lifted through the kindness of strangers.
"I think we should all do our part, even if it's just one or two things. Everybody needs to come out here, whether it's a small item, it doesn't matter. To put a smile on a child's face is a blessing in disguise," added Hodges.
They will be there every weekend this December and trucks will also be placed at the front of the stores. If you take a picture with your donation by the truck, you're encouraged to tweet it or share it via Facebook with the hash tag: #fillthetruck.
