Key Market Issues

With a market contribution of 47%, the carton remained the top choice in respect of pack type. But carton packaging remains under pressure having consistently lost share since 2007 to bottle (both plastic and glass), which, by 2012, accounted for 43% of the market. Product image issues are seen to be at work here.

Whilst the off-premise channel is showing definite signs of increase in Asia, supported by the rise of modern retail, it is actually tending to marginally contract in the Americas. Contributing influences here include on-premise meal deals in the US and a continued decline in juice options through Mexican retail.

Key Highlights

Just under two thirds of juice volume was ambient in 2012, with a third being chilled. Only around 1% was frozen. There has been little change in this split in more than five years.

Orange remained the top flavour choice with 44% of volume. This was slightly down on 2011. More orange juice is chilled than ambient. Apple (mainly ambient) retained its position as the second most popular juice overall, though this too lost a little share in 2012 falling to 18%.
