Officer Sustains Minor Injuries, One Arrested After Pursuit in Panama City

Eden Allen and her sister were on their way to pick up her nephew when they say they saw the car pulled over on 10th street and Jenks Avenue.

"It was pretty scary," said Allen. "I'm still shaking from it."

Police say 23-year old Angelo Maldonado was approached by an officer during a routine traffic stop. An incident occurred and when the officer on scene went to pull the driver out of the car the unthinkable happened.

"As he turned we heard the car door open and then slam and then we heard the squeal marks as he was turning," said Allen.

You can still see the tire marks on 10th street where the driver took off -- the officer still inside his car.

"Officer is fine we've check on him," said Chief of Police Scott Ervin. "Fortunately, he wasn't dragged along the ground. He was kind of upright and was able to disengage and get away from the vehicle."

During the course of the pursuit Maldonado struck a police vehicle in an attempt to force the car off the roadway. Officers caught up with him on 15th street in Panama City and after a short foot chase he was put under arrest.

"He went through to 11th street and came close to hitting several cars," said Allen. "He came within inches of hitting another car."

"I've learned that they threw an item out of the car that was recovered that contained narcotics," said Ervin. "So, there are going to be drug related charges in association to this case as well."

Police confirm a second person in the vehicle, but as of now he has not been charged with any crime.
