Aquirri Sentenced to 15 years for DUI Manslaughter

Posted: Updated:

Senior Circuit Judge Dedee Costello on Monday sentenced Margarito Curiel Aquirri to 15 years in prison for killing a man while driving drunk.

Aquirri, 44, of 7241 Coe Road, was found guilty as charged Nov. 6 of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide. State law prohibited Aquirri of being adjudicated of both crimes, so Assistant State Attorneys Bob Sombathy and Jennifer Hawkins asked Costello to declare him guilty and sentence him only on the manslaughter conviction.

Sombathy and Hawkins showed jurors during the two-day trial that Aquirri drove away from a friend's house with a blood alcohol level of .22 the night of Feb. 13, 2012, and crossed into oncoming traffic on the Hathaway Bridge, striking head on a vehicle driven by Ryan Ramsey of Panama City Beach. Ramsey, 28, was killed in the crash.

Ramsey's mother told Costello that she'll never again get the chance to tell her son she loves him.

Costello sentenced Aquirri to the maximum penalty and revoked his driver's license for life.
