The Jackson County Sheriff's Office is on alert, patrolling the state line area for a shooting suspect.
Sheriff Lou Roberts confirmed that deputies in the northern end of the county are on alert at this time after a shooting in Houston County, AL earlier today. Roberts says that his deputies don't have specific details of the vehicle that they are looking for, but have increased patrols in the area around the state line.
"We're taking our lead from the deputies in Alabama," Roberts said. "We will continue to monitor the situation."
According to the Jackson County Floridan, the incident started a little before 1 p.m., ending with a homeowner being shot and the shooter fleeing into nearby woods.
Houston County Sheriff's Capt. Antonio Gonzalez said they are currently looking for 17-year-old Brandon Smith, who lives in the area where the burglary and shooting took place. When apprehended, he will be charged with first-degree burglary and attempted murder, Gonzalez said.
The gunshot wounds suffered by the victim aren't thought to be life threatening. The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
As of 2:45 p.m., sheriff's deputies were still out in the area where the shooting happened, looking for Smith. He is described only as a white male who is about 6 feet tall and weighs 165 pounds. A perimeter has been set up in the area. Smith could be trying to get to Jackson County.
The Dale County Sheriff's Department's helicopter is also flying over the area, helping in the search for the shooter.
