Bay BASE Leaders Looking to Change Fee Schedule - WMBB News 13 - The Panhandle's News Leader

UPDATE: School Board Approves New Bay BASE Fees

Posted: Updated:

Sending your student to Bay BASE after school will cost some parents a little more and others a little less starting next school year.

Bay District School Board Members approved a change to the program's fee schedule at their meeting Tuesday afternoon.

For the 2014-2015 school year, it will cost $40 a week for each student.

For the 2014 summer, it will cost $65 a week for each student.

The program will still offer discounts for families who have multiple students.

Bay Base has relied on the free, reduced, and full pay lunch options as a basis for charging its own fees. However, Superintendent Bill Husfelt said the program requested a single rate instead of raising costs all together.

"We can't charge the tax payers to operate Bay BASE. We have to pass the cost on to the consumer because we don't have the funds to use for child care that aren't directly tied to education. That's why we have to do it."

The changes will not affect parents who receive financial assistance, such as through the Early Learning Coalition.

December 9th, 2013:

An after school care program could cost some parents a little bit more each week and others a little less for services next year. Bay District School Board Members will look at a proposal to change the Bay BASE Fee Schedule at their meeting Tuesday afternoon.

If approved, the program will charge a single rate this coming summer and school year. The program has relied on the free, reduced, and full pay lunch options as a basis for charging its own fees, but as the school district makes changes, leaders said they have to as well.

"Bay BASE is a program that has to operate in the black so that means the fees that we collect from parents are the fees that are used to support the program wholly," said program coordinator Pam Isenberg.

Currently, parents who pay full price for their child's meals at school pay $45 a week to attend Bay BASE. Those who pay a reduced cost for lunch pay $40 a week, and the free lunch cost for Bay BASE is $35.

"The lunch status is starting to go away now. We have some schools now that are COP schools, Community Option Provision schools, that are all free lunch so we've got to get away from that data base."

After a cost analysis, Insenberg determined the program needs to use a single rate schedule. If school board members approve, every parent would pay $40 a week for each child.

The Bay BASE Summer Program would also use a single rate, $65 a week for each student.

"We want to get our message out there now. These fees will not take affect until the summer of 2014 and the school year of 2014-2015 so we want to give plenty of time for parents to have choices and options."

The changes will not affect parents who receive financial assistance, such as through the Early Learning Coalition.
