Dr. Seuss once said, "The more that you read the more things you will know. The more you learn the more places you'll go." This morning Jackson Alternative School in Jackson County held a grand opening for a building dedicated to that very idea.
The Ben Carson Reading Room is officially open for leisure reading at the Jackson Alternative School. The room full of literature took time, dedication and money from both staff and community. The Ben Carson Reading Room has been in the works since early June when the School Board approved the concept. After $26,000 in donations, the room is now ready to enjoy.
There are currently 93 other Ben Carson Reading Rooms in the United States but this is the first to grace the state of Florida. The room is home to over 700 books ranging in topics and genres for an array of ages to discover.
According to District Three School Board member, Stacey Goodson, this reader's paradise will enable JAS students to be even more successful, "We've had some tremendous people in the community who gave donations to make this possible. And it's just something that needed to be at this school and our kids are going to benefit greatly. Hopefully they will use it because reading does open the world." The Carson Reading Room has exhausted all its donations. If you would like to help grow the reading room book collection you can donate books to the Jackson Alternative School.
