Dr. Maria Parris from Bay Medical-Sacred Heart Family Medicine says they are treating a lot of sore throats, also known as pharyngitis.  She says pharyngitis is the "inflammation of the pharynx," or throat.

Dr. Parris says it can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungal causes, and irritants.  She says irritants include chemicals, pollutants, reflux and allergies.

Symptoms include:

  • Discomfort in the throat
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Body aches
  • Inflamed tonsils
  • Enlarged lymph nodes

Dr. Parris says strep throat can cause complications.  That's why she says it's important to see a doctor if your sore throat is accompanied by fever, chills, a rash, urinary symptoms, nausea or vomiting, or if it doesn't improve within 48 hours.

Dr. Parris explains that treatment of pharyngitis depends on the cause.
