Two Shellfish Harvesting Areas Closed; One Re-Opening

Posted: Updated:

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is temporarily closing two shellfish areas at sunset on Tuesday January 14, 2014 for the harvest of oysters, clams, and mussels, and re-opening another one.

In this context, shellfish does not include scallops, shrimp, or crabs.

The two areas are:

  • #2002 CA Ochlockonee Bay Shellfish Harvest Area in Franklin/Wakulla Counties
  • #1212 East Bay Section 1 Shellfish Harvest Area in Bay County

In addition, the following area will re-open to harvesting on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at sunrise:

  • #1622 Apalachicola CA Winter Shellfish Harvest Area in Franklin County

The closure is based on a change in conditions specifically required under the management plan. Water samples will continue to be collected and analyzed for the area until the sample results conform to the management plan.

If you have any further questions concerning the closure of shellfish harvesting areas please contact Loanna Torrance or Jillian Fleiger at (850)236-2200.  The Division of Aquaculture's Daily Status report is found on the internet at www.FloridaAquaculture.com under the shellfish harvesting tab.
