Burglary Suspect Takes His Own Life

Posted: Updated:

The Bay County Sheriff's Office responded to a call in reference to a burglary on Knollwood Street in Bayou George at about 1:37 this afternoon.

A couple living at 6509 Knollwood told deputies they were outside the home and the woman was trying to enter a trailer on the property, but could not open the door. She went back into her home to get a screwdriver and returned to the trailer.

While trying to get in the door, the woman heard someone leave the trailer through another door.  The man saw a male suspect fleeing the trailer carrying a firearm and entering a nearby wooded area. Once the suspect entered the woods, the man heard a single gunshot. Concerned the suspect was possibly shooting at them, the couple went back into the residence on Knollwood to call the BCSO.

Deputies responded, set up a perimeter, and a K9 unit began to trail the suspect. The description of the suspect matched a man living at nearby 6420 Knollwood, but when deputies went to the home to speak with the suspect, the suspect's brother was in the front yard and refused a request by deputies to search the residence. A gunshot was then heard within the home.

Deputies found Trevor Byrd with a gunshot wound to the head and began CPR. Byrd was taken by EMS to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A firearm found next to Byrd's body was identified as stolen from the site of the original burglary at 6509 Knollwood.
