The South Walton Fire District (SWFD) responded to two woods fires overnight. On January 23 at 4:30 p.m., SWFD received a report of a woods fire located in the area of Mussett Bayou Rd in Santa Rosa Beach. SWFD crews arrived within minutes of the initial call to find approximately 10-15 acres of brush and woods on fire.
A separate woods fire was reported at 3:09 a.m. on January 24 in the vicinity of Nuit Rd in Santa Rosa Beach. Upon arrival at this location, fire crews found a fast moving fire with 10 acres of woods involved and threatening multiple structures. Although a quick response was initiated, a vacant house suffered fire and smoke damage at this particular fire.
Assistance was requested from the Florida Forest Service, Destin Fire Control District, Freeport Fire Department, Walton County Fire Rescue as well as the Walton County Sheriff's Office, to assist with containment and extinguishment of both of these fires.
The Florida Forest Service is conducting investigations into the cause of the fires. Dry conditions with low humidity as well as high winds will continue throughout this weekend. The SWFD would like to encourage citizens to refrain from open burning this weekend.
