Ian Satter with the Florida Department of Transportation says there are two joints in the Hathaway Bridge where the rubber has deteriorated due to the icy conditions.
Satter says the areas of concern are on the shoulders of both the east and westbound lanes where traffic does not travel. The rubber is used to prevent debris from falling on boaters going under the bridge. The points of concern will be barricaded. Satter tells News 13 the repairs to the joints are simple and will be completed once the weather clears and the bridge dries out.
Satter says the bridge is structurally safe. He also says the inspectors will be taking a look at the bridge over the next few hours to see if there are any other issues caused by the recent weather conditions. He says DOT will be out inspecting all bridges and roads affected by the polar blast.
Lanes could be restricted periodically due to crews clearing sand from the bridge. The joint issue although should not impact traffic.
