Bronchitis has been going around for the past several weeks.

Dr. Stephen Armistead from Bay Medical-Sacred Heart Family Medicine says acute bronchitis is common and develops from a cold or other respiratory infection.  Dr. Armistead says often it's a viral infection and antibiotics aren't needed.

Symptoms of bronchitis include:

  • A cough that persists for 5 days or more
  • Mucus production
  • A low-grade fever
  • Chest soreness
  • Fatigue

Dr. Armistead says if you have bronchitis you should do the following:

  • Get plenty of rest
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Avoid smoking
  • Mucinex can help with symptoms
  • Avoid aspirin if you are younger than 18

He recommends seeing a doctor if you have any of the following:

  • Persistent fever
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • No improvement after five days with over-the-counter medication
