What's Going Around - February 5

Gastroenteritis is going around, and it can cause quite a bit of stomach pain.

Nurse Practitioner Christy Johnson from Bay Medical-Sacred Heart Family Medicine says gastroenteritis is commonly referred to as the " stomach flu".  

Symptoms include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramps and pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Muscle aches
  • Headache
  • Fever

Johnson urges you seek medical attention if any of the following occurs:

  • You can't keep liquids down for 24 hours
  • You've been vomiting for more than two days
  • You vomit blood
  • You notice blood in your bowel movements
  • You have a fever above 104
  • You experience signs of dehydration

Signs of dehydration include:

  • Decreased or no urine production
  • Dry mouth or skin
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness
