Bay County, Fla. -

Sinusitis is going around this week.  Dr. Stephen Armistead from Bay Medical-Sacred Heart Family Medicine says sinusitis is an "infection or inflammation (redness and soreness) of the sinuses".

Dr. Armistead says symptoms of sinusitis include:

  • Nasal congestion with a white or greenish-yellow discharge
  • Feeling of pressure inside the head
  • Eye pain
  • Headache
  • Cheek pain that can resemble a toothache
  • Post-nasal drip
  • Cough
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Fever
  • Swelling of the sinus openings

Dr. Armistead recommends prompt treatment of any cold or other viral infection to prevent sinusitis.

He says treatment can also include:

  • Applying moist heat to relieve the pain in the sinuses and nose
  • Taking a warm shower once or twice a day
  • Nonprescription nasal decongestants (used for only 3 days in a row)
  • Saline nasal sprays
  • Nonprescription antihistamines
  • Drugs to reduce congestion
  • Acetaminophen
  • Antibiotic
