On Friday afternoon, the Malone Tigers boys basketball team returned home as State Champions. On Thursday, the Tigers captured their 14th State Championship in boys basketball in school history, and the Malone community, supporting the team on their arrival. The team was greeted with fans holding signs, welcoming them home with the Class 1A trophy.
The Tigers were originally set to go to Busch Gardens Friday, but decided they wanted to get back home and enjoy the win with the community. Head Coach Steven Welch said he was ecstatic with the welcome home celebration, and happy he and the rest of the team could keep up with the great tradition of wining State Championships at Malone.
"I just think this little outpouring really says a lot for what it does mean to this community," he said Friday. "You come in and the streets were lined with people there holding signs, the gym is full of people. It's tradition here, you come into town and all four sides of town you are going to drive past a State Championship sign that has every year on it. We are just thankful and blessed to add another year to it."
