Demolishing History For New Opportunity

Posted: Updated:

The City of Marianna is saying goodbye to a longtime landmark. The Hinson House, built in 1940, has been under demolition for about a week and soon it will be just a memory. The Hinson residence is located near the heart Marianna at the corner of Lafayette St and Guyton St.

In a matter of months the site will host a Dollar General Plus grand opening. Demolition started last week and the home is scheduled to come down by next Friday. Asbestos was found in the roof top shingles and also in pipe insulation. The Hinson home was completed in the 1940's and considered a beautiful show home in Marianna.

For five years the home has been vacant and now the city is putting the location to use. Dollar General Plus provides 3,000 square feet of additional retail space verses regular Dollar General stores. The new store will be complete with a market area, more household items and clothing.

Northwest Construction Owner, Joe Bennett, has built many Dollar Generals in the Panhandle and is looking forward to bringing money and life back to the property, "We are cleaning up an area that had a lot of drug dealing going on and who knows what going on. We are turning it into something that is actually producing tax and producing jobs."

Construction is planned to wrap June 15 of this year.
