Community members gathered at the Jackson County Public Library to celebrate 'Viva Florida', which is the state's 500th birthday..
"As a part of that celebration the State of Florida gave each of the 67 counties one of these time capsules to be filled with items that reflect life in Jackson County in the year 2013," Diane Oswald said.
The Friends of the Library worked to include all aspects of the county. Government is represented with a picture of council members and a letter detailing the county's aspirations. The school board wrote a letter about the current state of schools and future goals. And 5th graders from Sneads Elementary wrote about school days in 2014.
The capsule holds 31 different items ranging from religion, real estate information and tourist attractions.
"We always think of the past but I think to tie it all together and to know those people in 2047 that we were thinking of them in 2014 and celebrating the anniversary of the state of Florida is very meaningful," Oswald said.
The capsule won't be buried but instead it will be on display at the Public Library until August 12th, 2047. That is the 225th anniversary of Jackson County's establishment.
