Sinus infections are going around this week.

Nurse Practitioner Christy Johnson from Bay Medical-Sacred Heart Family Medicine says, "A sinus infection is inflammation or swelling of your sinuses.  When the sinuses become blocked and filled with fluid, bacteria can grow there and cause infection."

She says symptoms of a sinus infection include:

  • Thick yellow, foul-smelling nasal discharge
  • Pressure or pain around the face and eyes
  • Headache
  • Nasal obstruction
  • Congestion
  • Post-nasal drip
  • A cold that won't go away or gets worse
  • Fever
  • Cough

Johnson says you should see a doctor if any of the following occurs:

  • Pain around your face or eyes with a yellow or green discharge for more than a week
  • A fever
  • You have symptoms that are severe
  • Symptoms don't get better with over-the-counter treatments
