Two Charged in Jackson County After Traffic Stop

Posted: Updated:
On 05/01/14, units with the Jackson County Drug Task Force received information that a wanted person with an active arrest warrant had been seen in the Grand Ridge Area, driving a pink in color passenger car.

Moments later, investigators observed a vehicle matching the description that given traveling West bound on Blue Springs Hwy.  Upon investigators turning around on the vehicle it began to accelerate at a high rate of speed, weaving from one side of the lane to the other, in a careless manner.  Investigators were able to follow the vehicle where it continued to accelerate at speeds over 90 mph.

When investigators initiated and attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle it continued to speed away at speeds in excess of 90 mph.  The vehicle continued to accelerate west bound at a high rate of speed on Blue Springs Rd.  The vehicle then turned south onto Reddoch Road as investigators continued to pursue it with emergency lights and siren at speeds well over 90 mph.

On Reddoch Road just west of Lawrence Road investigators affected a pit maneuver on the vehicle, due to the dangerous disregard for property and human life the driver had been showing.  The vehicle then exited the roadway where it collided with an electric utility pole.  The driver, later identified as Charlie Lee Jeromy Williams, then fled on foot North bound into a wooded area, while Investigators pursued him on foot yelling for him to stop.  Another male later identified as Roosevelt Darrell Peterson remained in the passenger seat of the vehicle and was detained.

K-9 units from Apalachee Correctional Institution and Jackson Correctional Institution were called to the scene where approximately 20 deputies assisted in the manhunt for the driver.  While deployment of the K-9 tracking teams the suspect was observed running back across Reddoch Rd, South bound into a wooded area West of Lawrence Rd.  The K-9 teams were able to track Williams back across the road where he was arrested after a brief struggle.

Upon Deputies searching the suspect vehicle they discovered a small Ziploc type bag in plain view under the front passenger seat that had an unknown white residue inside.  The baggy was consistent with those commonly used to contain and distribute illegal narcotics.  Also located in the vehicle, was a box of Swisher Sweets cigars that matched the swisher sweets cigars that was later found on the roadside.

A post Miranda statement was obtained from both defendants at the Sheriff’s Office.  During those statements, both Williams and Peterson confessed to possessing cocaine that they attempted to dispose of by throwing it out of the vehicle window, during the vehicle pursuit.  Williams and Peterson both advised that they had purchased the Swisher Sweets cigars for the purpose of lacing them with the cocaine.

Investigators later located the cocaine on the side of Blue Springs Hwy in the area that had been described by Williams and Peterson.  The cocaine was packaged in five (5) separate bags, of varying amounts, along with the two boxes of cigars.  A field test of the substance performed and tested positive for the presence of cocaine.  The combined weight of the cocaine was approximately 62 grams.  During the investigation, Investigators learned that Williams was currently on State Probation for trafficking in cocaine, where he was sentenced on 01/03/2011.  Williams and Peterson were both arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on the following charges:

Charlie Lee Jeromy Williams,  B/M 35 years of age. Charges: Trafficking in a Controlled Substance, Cocaine; Tampering with Evidence; Possession of Drug Paraphernalia; Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer; Resisting on Officer Without Violence; Violation of State Probation

Roosevelt Darrell Peterson,  B/M  30 years of age. Charges: Trafficking in a Controlled Substance, Cocaine; Tampering with Evidence; Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
