- Company highlights that most people are unaware strokes can occur without warning -

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio, May 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Think you know how to spot the warning signs of a stroke? You may want to think again. In preparation for May's Stroke Awareness Month Campaign, Life Line Screening showed that the average person does not know that most stroke victims get no warning signs prior to having a stroke.

On May 1, Life Line Screening released new educational content about stroke as part of a month-long surge to raise awareness around the condition and the benefits of preventive stroke screenings.

In a new stroke awareness video, Life Line Screening interviewed health screening participants at a community screening event to test common knowledge about stroke. Participants were asked simple questions about the condition, and while many were able to name a few of the indicators of someone having a stroke, they were surprised to learn that most strokes happen without warning. Accompanying the new video, Life Line Screening released an educational infographic focusing on stroke prevalence, F.A.S.T. awareness and stroke risk factors.

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States, with one person dying from the condition about every four minutes. "Our hope is that people will share the video and infographic to spread awareness about stroke," said Joelle Reizes, Global Communications Director for Life Line Screening. "80% of strokes are preventable, so increasing awareness and helping people understand the benefits of preventive screenings are key to helping reduce the unacceptable toll that stroke takes on peoples' lives and our healthcare system."

Preventive health screenings are vitally important to early detection for many people, giving them the chance to make necessary lifestyle changes that can reduce stroke risk. Recent research shows that community-based health screenings for adverse cardiovascular outcomes, including stroke, may be a motivating factor toward improved health behavior or use of medical resources.

Preventive stroke screenings help detect risk factors such as plaque buildup, high blood pressure and high cholesterol early. Life Line Screening offers five screenings to help older adults understand their risk for stroke: carotid artery disease screening, atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) screening, lipid panel screening, glucose screening and C-reactive protein screening. The screenings are fast, noninvasive, painless, affordable and convenient.

To further show a commitment to stroke prevention, Life Line Screening is giving away five free stroke screenings during the month of May. Contestants can enter to win a stroke screening on the Life Line Screening blog and they will earn extra entries when they share the infographic to help spread education and awareness. The contest will end on May 31, 2014 at 11:59pm (EDT), and winners will be contacted via email.
