It was a day for pampering and beauty at the Chipola College Cosmetology Program, as cancer survivors and fighters made their way to the campus for a day of free services.
The college is honoring Cancer Survivor Beauty and Support Day. It's a day to honor those fighting cancer and those who have defeated it. Today many women were pampered and given a new look to help start a new chapter in their life. These cancer fighters are being treated to a complementary shampoo, style haircut, manicure and facial.
For student Hilary Shumaker, this is an extra special client, her mother
"I know what she's gone thru and it makes me feel a lot better to know I can make her feel prettier," Hilary Shoemaker said. "Its extra special for mother to be in this class and her do this for me today. Its a fun part and for us to share this together is special. It's not all bad it's what you make it," said her daughter Teresa Shumaker.
Students are using their skills to make these women as beautiful on the outside as they are strong on the outside.
"It's nice to feel like a woman again. When you have breast cancer you lose your breast and your on steroids and you don't feel like a woman. So this is nice," said Kitty Thipen.
The salon had over 20 people booked for the day and many people walked in and were welcomed with a chair and stylist. Students were given a chance to give back while perfecting their skills.
"It's a chance to give back and say, 'hey i may not know exactly what you've gone through but I'm here,' " said cosmetology instructor Ada Scott.
Scott was very pleased with the turnout and hopes to continue the event in the future.
