In just their second season, the Panama City Beach Pirates soccer club finished 10-3-1, falling in the postseason playoffs. The guys are back in action for year number three, and this weekend, open up their home schedule.
The Pirates are 0-1 on the year as they enter Saturday night's match-up with Southwest Florida, who is 3-1-2 in Southeast Division play in the United Soccer League's Premiere Development League.
The Pirates return seven key players off last year's squad, and head coach Greg DeVito also makes his return for the third season. The Pirates smoothed things out last night before Saturday's match, and DeVito saying with the success of last year's club, they have a lot to build off of.
"We're absolutely excited about this upcoming season," he said Thursday night. "Off of last year's season, we're looking to build off of that. The players are ready to put another successful season together. We've got a core group of seven returners, a well balanced approach to the returners, but the newcomers also add a lot to the team. They're blending together well and there's a good balance and they all play at a very high level, so I'm looking forward to the season."
Saturday's contest with Southwest Florida kicks off at 7:15/CT at Gavlak Stadium at Arnold High School.
