Doctors are treating a lot of allergic reactions from yellow flies.  Dr. Josh Reams from Bay Medical-Sacred Heart Family Medicine says the bites can be painful and lead to inflammation, which can be severe.  

Dr. Reams says symptoms include: 

  • Painful, itchy skin
  • Blisters 
Dr. Reams says to prevent bites do the following:

  • Avoid being outside in the early morning or late afternoon. 
  • Avoid standing water, shaded and humid areas.
  • Use insect repellent with DEET. 
  • Wear long sleeves, gloves, and headnets. 
Treatment includes:

  • Applying ice
  • Benadryl Cream
  • Calamine Lotion 
  • Steroid Cream like Hydrocortisone 
  • Oral Claritin or Zyrtec for the itching 
  • Do not scratch
Dr. Reams recommends seeing a doctor immediately if any of the following occurs: 

  • Redness or pain worsens 
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Chest pain
  • Throat is closing
